Magisterium of the People is the Story of the People’s Pastoral of Catholic Community of Appalachia. The Catholic Committee of Appalachia has served the poor and the entire web of creation since 1970. Its hallmark: three pastoral letters published over the last forty years that have told the story of a land and people struggling for survival against a system of indifference and exploitation. One of its first members was Sister Beth Davies of the Congrégation de Notre-Dame (CND). She and CCA were instrumental in the development of the first Pastoral Letter of the Bishops of Appalachia in 1975, This Land is Home to Me, which boldly challenged the exploitation of coal miners at the hands of the rich and powerful, and prophetically called for a new and sustainable relationship with Creation.
