We traveled to Albany yesterday to engage in nonviolent direct action as part of the statewide and national Poor People’s Campaign because we believe that everybody has a right to live. We believe that everybody has a right to quality education, housing, and income. We believe that workers should be paid a living wage and guaranteed the right to organize.
Due to the work we engage in everyday at St. Joe’s and in our local community, we are particularly compelled to speak out about issues of homelessness, lack of affordable housing, and slum living conditions.
To draw attention to the way the rich and powerful buy favor with our state legislators, we left a trail of money bags from the State Legislative Offices to the Fort Orange Club, an exclusive club where lobbyists and politicians are known to meet. We then sang and chanted while blocking the parking lot and entrances to the club.
As a result, the 5 of us were among 32 people arrested for trespassing and disorderly conduct.
We sat in jail cells with teachers, union organizers, interfaith clergy, homeless people, housing advocates, minimum wage workers, and others from all across New York State – while countless others filled jails in 36 other state capitals. The violation of poor people’s right to live is a systemic national injustice.
As long as poor people are being abused we will continue to resist. We join the Poor People’s Campaign in crying out for a moral revival!
